Product Design Accomplishments
I have been very active in the firearms industry for a number of years. Not only as a pistolsmith and as a founding member of IDPA, but as a leading consultant to vendors who specialize in making weapons and equipment for Special Operations Forces. I have given input to countless vendors on numerous products but the following items are the ones I feel are most noteworthy. They are all products that I had a key role in developing. Several have gone on to be benchmark equipment in the Spec Ops arena.
Daniel Defense: I am currently a consultant and proud to have helped in a small way to bring the Daniel Defense M4 Carbine to the market.
Blue Force Gear: I currently work with Blue Force Gear in designing some of the best two point tactical slings on the market. In conjunction with BFG, I have also designed a line of excellent 1911 parts.
TangoDown: I worked with them to develop the Vickers Mag Catch for Glock pistols (pre-Gen4).
Heckler & Koch: HK416 carbine – The preferred 5.56mm carbine for the most elite special operations soldiers in the world. I have been called the father of the HK416, however my partner from the start was Ernst Mauch, the former managing director of HK. Ernst and I definitely played key roles in the development of the HK416, HK 417 (7.62mm Battle Rifle), HK45 service pistol, and HK45 Compact.
Schmidt & Bender: 1.1 – 4 x 20 CQB Short Dot scope - A scope developed at my request and with my direct input by World Class scope maker Schmidt & Bender. Considered by many to be the best in its class, it set a new standard in the tactical scope market, and started a series of events that eventually led to the US Marine Corps adopting a S&B tactical scope to replace the famed Unertl 10X USMC sniper scope. The CQB Short Dot is used by various US Spec Ops Forces, as are other S&B sniper scopes.
Surefire: X200 series tactical light – I provided the input and ‘impetus’ (to be politically correct) for Surefire to change directions from a big ‘crew served’ weaponslight to a smaller & lighter weaponslight approach. It took a long time but Surefire finally introduced the X200 and it has been a run away success ever since. The X200 is the predecessor to the current X300. Scoutlight tactical light – Another spin off of my smaller lighter weaponslight input to Surefire. A good piece of kit that has been very well received on the market.
Insight Technology Inc.: M3X weaponslight – I provided initial input to ITI to make the M3 a more rugged weaponslight. M6X laser/weaponslight – I provided the same guidance to ITI for the M6 series of laser/weaponslight as I did for the M3X. The end result is the M6X. ATPIAL infrared laser & illuminator – I provided input early in the development of the ATPIAL to make a next generation PEQ2 infrared laser & illuminator.
Additional products that I’m involved in are always in development and when they come to market, I will announce them on my email newsletter.
